Hysterical is a dudeless literary utopia where we highlight and champion the voices of writers who are women, femmes, and non-binary people. People in the back, in the margins, people who have to fight to get a word in edgewise, people who create whole worlds just to amuse themselves.
We want to reclaim our voices. We want to celebrate people writing against prevailing patriarchal expectations, and against the expectations society places upon them to conform. We want to offer a magazine and a community that says “look at these badasses” because recognition is still minimal. VIDA’s 2016 count showed that only 48% of surveyed publications reach gender parity and we want to do our part to change that. We want to widen what is celebrated in literary circles and society as a whole.
So every quarter we’ll publish an issue, and every issue will have a humor section, because brash, combative, and subversive humor is still marked as the territory of men and because, well, we like it. But we’ll publish it all: cerebral, tragic, daring, experimental. As long as it’s good, powerful, and surprising.
Sound good? We think so. We’re launching this fall, and we want to hear from you.
